Computer software is a general term used to describe computer programs that perform some task on a computer system. The term includes application software such as Office Software for business (word processors, spreadsheets, presentation, databases, email and calendars, graphics and design applications), which perform productive tasks for users. Application software can also include software for personal use (such as games), educational software as well, programming and development tools, . System software (such as operating systems), interfaces with the computer's hardware, to provide the necessary services for basic computer functions. Examples of system software include: Microsoft Windows XP & Windows Vista, server operating systems like Microsoft Small Business Server or Windows Server 2003. System software can also include security software and utilities.
Software, unlike hardware, is typically no sold, but rather it is licensed for specific uses.
