Purchased with a little reserve as I wasn't sure this would work with my moboard(ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE) Worked great with only one small problem, it was not able to create an IP address. Reloaded Vista and problem solved. A little bit of a sticker shock but worth the money IMO.

OK: We all know by looking at the price that this is by no means a cheap processor upgrade. I upgraded from a A64 3500+ single core to this opty 180 and have not had any regrets. sure you could buy a used x2 4800 or fx-60 but you get the same perfomance with more redundancy becuase this chip was built for servers to be run in the most exhausting circumstances and it comes with a 3 year warranty. you don't get warranty like that with used cpu's. The choice is yours Keep rockin your s939 or wait for AM3 prices to drop that could be a while.

I wasnt sure if this processor would work in my Biostar NF4 Ultra-A9A mobo but I ordered it. Turns out it worked flawlessly. I bumped it up to about 2.8ghz and this cpu rocks even with the older ram. I was very surprised at the fact that in every benchmark i ran it nearly matches my friends AM2 6000+ @ 3ghz and was consistently above his when he clocked it down to 2.8ghz (5600+). It really was impressive as i thought the old DDR dual channel pc3200 would really hold back the processor but it didnt at all. The tighter timings really helped i guess. One thing i would like to note is that after doing a lot of research I found that even though they are not listed to be supported, pretty much any socket 939 mobo that can can support X2 CPUs will work with this opteron. I havent found a single instant where they wouldnt. AMD wouldnt let them advertise this because they needed to sell server boards. So dont be so afraid, it is a great upgrade for dual core supporting socket 939 motherboards

Like the previous reviewer, I too have an AN8-E motherboard with few if any upgrade options for CPU's. I had an X2 3800+ previously. With the installation of the Opteron 180, I have breathed new life into my aging system and will be able to delay a complete overhaul for at least a year.

Simple yet very substantial upgrade. Breathes new life into a socket 939 system to a Dual-Core Opteron X2 processor. Upgrade options are becoming very scarce. Should be able to squeeze another year or two out of this aging architecture. Installed with a new Thermaltake cooler without a hitch on Asus A8N-E motherboard. Booted up right away and runs fine with bios updates from Asus. Fast and stable. Also upgraded to 4 gigs of new memory which this board and cpu supports, even under XP Home SP3. Only minor complaint is this cpu upgrade is IMO a little pricey, but not terrible considering higher cost to start off again from scratch.

The Opteron 165 to 185 series dual-core Socket 939 cpus are generally superior to the regular 939 X2s in that they all feature 2MB of L2 cache...including the baby of the bunch, the 165. They can also be overclocked like mad. The Opty 185 is exactly the same as an FX-60 except it doesn't have the unblocked multiplier. The 180 for sale here is only one notch down from the 185, and the price is considerably lower than it was even a short time ago.

I love this CPU. It has greatly increased my FPS in EVE-Online and extended the life of my A8N SLI SE Board. If you have a solid 939 board, this is a good way to go if you don't have the cash for a new board, chip, ram, and Video card if your running an AGP.
Yes, we are getting hosed on the price. But that's supply and demand for you. My only concern is with TigerDirects use of shippers. UPS is slow and expensive. A choice of Canada Post would have been nice.
