I upgraded to HV30 after my old JVC gave me a E04 error & stopped accepting tapes. So far I am happy with the purchase.
Pros:
Great picture quality,
Ease of use,
Mini DV tapes that I am used to and
HD home videos on my 60'' Sony XBR.
Cons:
Mini DV housing a bit flimsy (not expected on a high end camcorder)
Only 10X zoom
To me, HDV camcorders seems to be logical evolution, instead of making a leap to SD/Hard disk based AVCHD models - I would give them a few more iterations to mature. And I am not too happy about being forced to upgrade my PC (video card) to create/edit HD movies. I am sure I'll ''discover'' more features as I use it more.
Final word: Great camcorder, if it suits your needs, buy it! |

This is a great HD tape style HDV camera, along with its predecessor, the HV20 which is available as a refurbished purchase on Tiger. Both have a single control ring that you can map to a host of functions, and the autofocus is decent, and color capture good. HV30 improved snapshot cam. Import to a computer for editing or export, or burning a DVD is via 1394 firewire. If you computer is lacking 1394, you can purchase a 1394a-400Mhz for about $25 or less for your computer. HDV video import is supported by Corel VS X2, Magix MEP 14, Pinnacle Stud v12 software. The camera takes excellent video for the price. HDV still offers the best video quality over HD AVCHD. AVCHD still suffers from poor support by video editing packages (in 2009 it is almost there, but still problematic and troublesome, not problem free). 10X optical zoom is poorer than the Pro cam's and the 35X available on SD DV cams these days. Canon is holding back on better zoom to support pricing on the Pro models I think |

Fantastic Home HD Camera. Canon optics have always been the best of the best, and this camcorder is no exception. You will need to supply you own firewire (1384) cable to connect to your PC, however most if not all PC's available for the last several years should come with a firewire port. Cinema Mode and Image Stabilization on this unit are fantastic and rival units of 3 times the cost. All in All this is a great camera for the home user that wants to capture great HD video. |

After purchasing this camera, my wife, who holds a very respectable position at a university, and I, an engineer, had real difficulties understanding the vague manual. Then we tried to get a cable not supplied with camera, in order to download the video to the computer. Beware that you have to have a ''special'' connection, which is not on most computers. You may have to buy another video card to make the connection. The software that comes with the camcorder, appears to be the software to download the video. It's not. The Canon website doesn't even allow you to access any information on the camera. The camera is very complex, and we have yet to find the proper software to download our videos. Very dissappointing purchase. Next time we're buying a digital camcorder. Tapes are not the way to go. I based this review on how good the use of this camcarder is. It's not for that much money. |

This camera is top notch in what it has to offer. The quality of the HDV, way surpasses the harddrive and sd card cameras. It goes to tape and that gives me peace of mind, in knowing I have my footage... and it not getting corrupted or lost because of drive failure.
The issue is the actual construction of this thing. The door for the tape cartridge is loose. This is a flaw in the design of the camera. The CNET review shows it, and you'd think Canon would've done something about it. I had to return my first camera, thinking it even more messed up than what CNET had shown, but after getting my second camera, I realized this is just the way of this camera. So it's one of those grin and bear it situations. There are no other cameras like this on the market, and yet, it's built like crap. Go figure. |
