...I don't like the big lit-up logo on the front of it. If there was a way to get rid of this distracting illumination, this would get all 5s from me.

Worked right out of the box with no tweaking. This player replaced an older Toshiba that was purchased with a Toshiba Cinema HD TV and it brings new impact to the TV in better color, contrast and sharpness - Great job!

Toshiba Toshiba, a world leader in high
technology, is a diversified manufacturer and marketer of advanced
electronic and electrical products, spanning information & communications
equipment and systems, Internet-based solutions and services, electronic
components and materials, power systems, industrial and social
infrastructure systems, and household appliances.
Toshiba's early history has two strands: 1875 saw the establishment of
Tanaka Seizo-sho (Tanaka Engineering Works), Japan's first manufacturer of
telegraphic equipment. Its founder, Hisashige Tanaka (1799 - 1881), was
well known from his youth for inventions that included mechanical dolls
and a perpetual clock. Under the name Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Shibaura
Engineering Works), his company became one of Japan's largest
manufacturers of heavy electrical apparatus. In 1890, Hakunetsu-sha & Co.,
Ltd. was established as Japan's first plant for electric incandescent
lamps. Subsequent diversification saw the company evolve as a manufacturer
of consumer products. In 1899, the company was renamed Tokyo Denki (Tokyo
Electric Co.).
In 1939, these two companies, leaders in their respective fields, merged
to form an integrated electric equipment manufacturer, Tokyo Shibaura
Denki (Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd.). The company was soon well known
as 'Toshiba,' which became its official name in 1978.
By continually developing innovative
technologies centering on the fields of Electronics and Energy, Toshiba
strives to create products and services that enhance human life, and which
lead to a thriving, healthy society. They constantly seek new approaches
that help realize the goals of the world community, including ways to
improve the global environment.
In the office and in the home, on the
move, throughout today's connected world, Toshiba applies cutting-edge
capabilities to the creation of digital products and solutions that make a
difference. A determination to meet diverse market needs in the era of
digital convergence supports Toshiba in maintaining their leading position
in key digital product areas. Their product mix is optimized for
success in high-growth areas such as digital consumer products and mobile
equipment, and in key markets, including the fast growing markets of the
world. By delivering core infrastructure for power generation systems,
industrial systems and for essential social needs, Toshiba provides firm
foundations for society's well-being and continued progress.
As a corporate citizen of planet Earth,
Toshiba puts CSR (corporate social responsibility) at the heart of its
management. They prioritize respect for life and safety and full
compliance in all activities and by every employee. They see environmental
protection as particularly important. Through our “Environmental Vision
2050” and voluntary environmental action plan, they aim to increase
Toshiba Group’s overall eco-efficiency ten-fold by fiscal 2050, through
strict environmental management, cuts in CO2 emissions, delivering
environmentally-conscious products and promoting energy saving at their
facilities.
Today, Toshiba operates a global network
of subsidiaries and affiliates, with some 198,000 employees worldwide
engaged in all aspects of Toshiba’s business: from advanced research to
procurement, manufacturing,
and sales and marketing. Toshiba’s successful long-term global presence,
the very process of enhancing Toshiba’s globalization in fact, rests on
the highly capable and motivated local staff who commit to Toshiba.
Production at Toshiba Group’s worldwide manufacturing network, including
Toshiba Corporation’s 40-plus facilities, covers the company’s diverse
product portfolio, including leading-edge semiconductors, TVs, portable
PCs, data storage devices, consumer products and power plant systems.
Manufacturing
activities are supported by a dedicated procurement organization that
operates International Procurement Offices in 10 strategic locations
around the world: San Francisco, Boston, London, Singapore, Taipei, Hong
Kong, Shanghai, Dalian, Shenzhen, and Tokyo.
Benefit: Viewing experience is enhanced thanks to three user selectable modes: Sharp for added edge detail, Color for richer blues and greens, and Contrast for enhancement of details in darker scenes.
A Closer Look
Toshiba XD-E500 DVD Player
Reviewed By Our Editors
With a next-generation HD format like Blu-ray still trying to gain a more stable foothold in our country, Toshiba plays it safe and wants you to meet the advanced Toshiba XD-E500 DVD Player. Consumers have embraced the DVD format like no other technology and invested in sizeable DVD movie collections. As the market moves towards high definition, the XD-E500 lets them experience their existing DVD library in a whole new way. The XD-E500 offers consumers the chance to watch their existing DVD collections at near-HD resolutions, replete with enhanced detail and richer colors. Toshiba is delivering to consumers what they want: a high quality experience at an affordable price.
The Toshiba XDE-500 DVD Player has Toshiba's new XDE technology on board along with Sharp, Color and Contrast Modes to provide added detail, rich colors and deep blacks. Its DVD up-scale feature lets you watch your standard definition movies in 720p, 1080i or 1080p. An HDMI connection allows for seamless flow of both video and audio data from the DVD player to the HDTV. The HDTV also plays host to 3D Virtual Surround Sound technology, for audio that’s as pleasing as the visuals. Support for JPEG display and MP3 Playback round out its list of surface-level features. Undoubtedly, although the Toshiba XDE500 doesn't play HD DVD or Blu-Ray, it will make the very most of your standard definition DVDs and create a whole new movie experience for you.
The Toshiba XD-E500 looks like a little black box with a minimalist design philosophy. The size of an old VHS player and sporting a new look from Toshiba, it is something you’ll be proud to put in your living room. During operation, you'll get a glowing white Toshiba logo, and a clear green display giving you the chapter numbers and other info about the DVD you are watching. There are hard playback buttons along the front panel that are refined and easy to use. While watching though, it’s doubtful that you’ll be using the said buttons as virtually all the player's controls are operated via the well laid out remote. The remote, which is also black, gives you all the controls you want and is dedicated to the DVD player. The DVD player supports playback of standard DVDs, CDs and DivX, MP3 and JPEG, while audio formats from Dolby Digital and DTS get support too.
While there are no options to turn the new up-scaling technologies on or off, what you do have though is three options to control the picture with three presets: Sharp, Color and Contrast. Sharp will sharpen the picture where needed rather than the whole picture, Color ups the blues and greens, while Contrast deepens the blacks. The result is a noticeable visual improvement, making your DVD collection sharper whatever you opt to play.
The Toshiba XD-E500 is an impressive up-scaling DVD player that is not only affordable but will go a long way to giving new life to your DVD collection. It’s like watching your favorite DVD movies in a new light!
